Open Call:
Small Hours
Application Deadline: 1st December, 2024
Project Dates: Saturday, 25th – Sunday, 26th January, 2025
Location: The Island (circus space) Nelson Street, Bristol, BS1 2BE
Artist Fee: £300 for two days
I’m a contemporary installation artist and in January, 2025, I am creating an art film with a dancer interpreting and improvising movement within my artwork, Aegri Somnia (a sick man’s dream). I am working with filmmaker, Daniel Martin.
Scenario:
A figure lays sleepless in a vast bed in the half light of the small hours. They are swamped by too much bedding. It constricts tightly here and hangs loose there. The figure is uncomfortable, twisting and shifting position almost constantly. Eyes closed. Eyes open. Sighing. Thrashing. Over and over. Sometimes the movement stops and the figure lays on their back staring at the ceiling.
The artwork is made of grey bed linens and bedding, which have been written over in dark ink. The installation is not a backdrop to the dancer, but a meeting between the two. This work is about insomnia and how internal voices and intrusive thoughts can keep us awake night after night.
Ideal candidate:
You are a professional dancer over 18 years old.
You are based in the Bristol area (only travel costs within the Bristol area are provided).
You are happy to improvise and interpret the theme of insomnia.
Genres: Contemporary, Modern and Hip-Hop considered.
I would prefer a dancer who doesn’t have colourful or very blond hair, or highly coloured tattoos. I am interested in all body types, genders and ages (18 plus).
I require the dancer to provide their own costume: fairly dark grey/neutral vest and shorts or lounge wear – something comfortable that you would sleep in (however not pyjamas or nightdresses).
Accessibility:
Please note, there is no accessible toilet at The Island and all areas are
accessed via steps. It is housed in the old Bridewell police station, a grade
II listed building. Access is limited.
